![]() Kinda how like win3.1 on pentiums was blazing fast, but that was basically the limit, similar to how win95 hit limits with memory and driver support once the hardware enters another era.īut the fundamental thing when comparing usage across eras is what you are doing-video was next to impossible in win3.1, and it's an everyday occurrence in 10. Once you take one or the other out of its era, either performance or usability problems eclipse any gains. In general, older software will run faster on newer hardware, but to a point of software/hardware of the same era. The difference is cost as older hardware is dirt cheap and xp is pretty much free, especially since the older hardware still has the coa. It can't do everything that the modern OSs can and does have limitations, but for basic usage it's up there with normal modern computers (not gaming rigs, etc). I'm actually using XP Steadystate now on an old Poweredge 2950 and it's nice and fast. I'm still going to put Win7 or Win10 on the laptop, I was just curious about how XP would run, but it's too outdated and too insecure at this point. It was just telling to me just how much it's wrong. This is not a new thought of course, we all know this. ![]() The only reason we don't notice it as much is because of the great hardware most of us have to run it on. ![]() With the exception of going from Vista to Win7 each new OS has been slower and more bloated. At each new OS release we always hear "This is the best and fastest Windows yet." That's a crock of shit. It just got me to thinking about how I really wish MS would make a true lightweight OS to run on older hardware. What a night and day difference, it felt like I had put a new CPU and SSD in the machine. So I got my Dell WinXP Media Center restore disk out and loaded that. I decided I wanted Windows back on the box so I loaded Win10 on it, and while it ran ok, it was nothing to write home about. I just have it in the garage in case I want to look at something while I'm out there tinkering. ![]() I have an old Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop that's still in pristine condition that I've had Linux Mint on for years. ![]()
